About HELVETAS in Myanmar

HELVETAS started working in Myanmar in 2012. We launched pilot activities in the central Dry Zone, focusing mainly on the livelihoods sector, addressing challenges related to improving on and off farm productivity, skills development, employment, and income options for rural men, women and youth, with special attention given to disadvantaged, at risk and vulnerable groups. We are registered with the Ministry of Home Affairs and work under a framework Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Rural Development, within the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation. We pro-actively seek and welcome added value and complementary collaboration with public, private, academic, media and other local and international development sector actors.

About Myanmar

Myanmar is situated in Southeast Asia and is bordered to the north and northeast by China, in the east and southeast by Laos and Thailand, in the south by the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal and in the west by Bangladesh and India. It is a land of hills and valleys and is rimmed in the north, east and west by mountain ranges forming a giant horseshoe. Enclosed within the mountain barriers are the flat lands of Ayeyarwaddy, Chindwin and Sittaung River valleys where most of the country’s agricultural land and population are concentrated.  According to the 2014 Census, there are just over 53 million ethnically diverse people.

HELVETAS Myanmar program

In complement to our HELVETAS organizational Vision and Mission, HELVETAS in Myanmar has as an Overall Goal to contribute to disadvantaged smallholders and rural young men and women benefitting from more socially driven and responsible development.  Our Specific Objective aims at disadvantaged smallholders and rural young men and women having increased access to reliable information, required resources and responsive services.

In the Myanmar context we focus on 3 key working areas, namely Skills Development and Education; Governance and Peace; and Rural Economy.  We firmly believe that Skills Development and Education enhances knowledge and learning which is required first and foremost for the inclusion of in particular the disadvantaged in their self, family's and community's development.  Governance and Peace are integral to sustainable development, hence this working area is as much treated as a stand-alone sector as it is mainstreamed in our working approach.  Good governance and peace requires and facilitates mainstreaming of gender equality and social equity promoting inclusive and active participation, ensuring families, communities, and citizens together with local authorities, public and private service providers are respecting, responding and enhancing each other's roles and responsiblities as duty bearers and rights holders.  With acquired kowledge, skills and in the presence of governance and peace, citizens, decision makers, service providers can through improved capacity and partnerhsip building, make more equitable and responsible active contribution to local development and stimulating Rural Economy.

Our projects

Leadership Training
As a partner in development we believe we are most effective in achieving sustainable development goals when these are worked towards in coordinated collaboration and equitable partnerships with government, state and non-state actors, civil society, academia, media, the public/private sector, and the communities we work with.

HELVETAS Organization

Map Where we work
HELVETAS founded in 1955 has over 60 years of experience in international cooperation.  In 2011, HELVETAS merged with Intercooperation, forming respectively HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation and HELVETAS Intercooperation gGmbH.  We have offices in Zurich and Berne, Switzerland, in Bonn, Germany, and a branch office in the USA. HELVETAS is a Swiss and German registered not for profit tax exempt non-governmental organization working in 33 developing, fragile and/or post conflict countries in Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia.

We retain state of the art expertise and provide assistance in 5 key working areas, namely Skills Development and Education (SDE); Governance and Peace (GoP); Rural Economy (REC); Water and Infrastructure (WIN); and Environment and Climate Change (ECC).  We enhance our impacts by mainstreaming 3 transversal priorities which are: Gender Equality and Social Equity (GSE); Knowledge and Learning (KL); and Capacity Building and Partnerhip (CBP).  These serve to support our efforts and commitment to evidence based inclusive dialogue and multi-stakeholder engagement and advocacy, bridging community level realities with national level policies.

Our vision is a just world in which all men and women determine the course of their lives in dignity and security, using environmental resources in a sustainable manner. This vision is the basis for the organisation’s mission to help disadvantaged men, women and communities in developing countries.

Our mission is that together with our partners, we support the efforts of disadvantaged people and communities in developing countries to determine the course of their own lives and provide help for them to help themselves. We promote fair access to essential resources and protect social, economic, political, environmental and cultural rights.
